Comments:
Construction of levees diverted water away from this lake and it remains either dry or ephemeral. This lake along with the wetland complex of the valley is considered a significant inland wetland of California. Was dry for 15 years until rain filled it with water again in 2019.

This entry to capture historical record of breeding grebes in CA prior to 2002. There were breeding grebes and noted as colony site in San Jacinto (Mystic) Lake in 1916, seven miles west of Pennington, no numbers or other details. Source is Nokes 1917.

Rare record of nesting in southern California by Nokes in May 5, 1916 (Condor 19:24, 1917). Three eggs were in this nest well incubated. No other details. Nokes (1917) notes on this is one paragraph, included the citation in this entry together with Lee's.
