Comments:
Rare records of winter nesting in southern California. Author (D. Lee) observed chick on back of an adult in February 25, 1966. He and Gerald Collier observed 22 Western grebes (including the parental pair).

This entry to capture historical record of breeding grebes in CA prior to 2002. There was a small number of grebes, mostly Clark's, thoughout the year seemingly, and noted as colony site, sources are Garrett and Dunn 1981 and Small 1994. No year, numbers nor other details. Estimating years as 1981 and 1994 due to source years.

Comments:
Species account of Western and Clark's breeding in San Diego County. Site of the first Western Grebe colony in San Diego County in 1956. Grebes are described as breeding regularly here. Other observation reported is in 1998 by P. Famolaro. Winter breeding was observed as early as 1966 by Lee (1967).
