Comments:
Was a large complex of wetlands until irrigation upstream cut off water sources to the lake, leaving it dry by 1899. Since then, the lakebed captures water from runoff, groundwater, and State Water Project and Central Valley Project water deliveries. Due to recent rains, water has flooded the area and filled the lake.

Comments:

This entry to capture historical record of breeding grebes in CA prior to 2002. There were large colonies historically according to Cogswell (1977). No numbers, years, nor other details. Estimating this as over 100 adult grebes. These colonies were lost due to drainage of water for agriculture (Cogswell 1977).
