Forest Fire 1910 - Wallace [1910] Soldiers Camp Item Info

Notes:
In August, 1910, four thousand soldiers were brought in to help fight the fire, including seven companies from the 25th Infantry, an African American Infantry Regiment known as the “Buffalo Soldiers.” Across the West, these soldiers served as the first park rangers, and the iconic Park Service hats—including that worn by Smokey Bear—are modeled after the hats worn by Buffalo Soldiers at the time (which can be seen in this photograph). During the Big Burn, soldiers from the 25th Infantry Regiment were responsible for evacuating and saving the town of Avery, ID, earning the gratitude of the residents of Avery despite their initial racist resistance, and a silence surrounding the role these soldiers had played in many historical accounts of the period. See Buffalo Soldiers Fight Fires and Stereotypes for more information.
